Tire
Application Guidelines
Purpose:
To create a consistent program that insures the proper tire is being installed on the vehicle.
Factors to consider:
The design of the tire should be appropriate for the vehicle
Weight:
The tire should be designed to carry the vehicle/axle weight. Always compare vehicle specifications and match that to tire specifications. Under no conditions can a tire be installed that is not designed to carry the weight.
Intended
Service:
The design of the tire should match the conditions under which the tire will be operating. The best tire on the wrong application will cause premature tread wear or damage. Consult tire manufacture for proper design.
Wheel
position:
Although most tires are designed to operate safely in all wheel positions it is recommended that you use the tire that will perform at the optimum level where applied. The obvious is not always true. Often tires on trailer positions perform better with less original tread then with a deeper tread that was designed for steering positions. Testing is recommended to determine best selections. More information on tire evaluation and testing is available in the tire evaluation link that can be connected to from the home page.
Geographic
considerations:
Choosing the best tire for each wheel position usually requires a series of compromises. Normally the more traction that is required the less mileage you can expect. Manufactures of both new and retreaded tires have been working diligently in this area and products are now available that offer both tread wear and traction with a minimum of trade-offs. Consult your tire manufacture for detailed comparisons.
